To stay high performing and high achieving, I choose to get quality rest that actually calms the nervous system through ancient herbs and roots. Instead of fighting the mind and silencing her, the ancient Chinese technique takes the approach of meeting the mind first, easing her concerns, in order to lead her towards sleep. She’s a smart cookie — that’s why she’s keeping you awake at night about the open threads that need to be closed, the potential potholes at work you need to watch out for. Which is why it’s our job to make sure she’s heard, recognized, and rested to do her best for us again and again.

Being a first born daughter in an immigrant family is a sure fire way to not get good sleep. Yes I’ll technically sleep for 7-8 hours but when I wake up feeling more tired than when I went to bed, it’s clear that the rest wasn’t effective. This reached an unbearable and unsustainable point in college, when I was double majoring and pre-med. The things I used to love started feeling like a chore, and every day became a ruthless hamster wheel. I fell out of love with life and thought it was because I wasn’t motivated enough, when all I really needed was proper rest.

When it comes to sleep, the ancient chinese medicinal formulas focus on ingredients that “calm” the spirit and the mind so we can hear our thoughts better and put them to rest. It’s not about sedating — it’s about listening.

So, welcome to a wiser girl’s night time routine, where we brew a calming tonic to hear our own thoughts…

Instructions

  1. Place all the ingredients in a pot to boil.

  2. If I’ve been feeling especially restless, I’ll add in the Astragalus root (2 pieces), a core ingredient in chinese medicine for anyone dealing with sleeping issues.

  3. Simmer for 5 mins.

  4. Enjoy a lightly flavored pot of tea, 30 mins before bed, doing an activity like journaling to meet my mind where she’s at.
